THE LOST BURUTU

LIST OF THE PASSENGERS AND CREW SAVED

The feared loss of life as a result of the sinking of the Burutu after collision amounts from 150 to 200.

ONLY THREE OFFICERS SAVED
The Burutu colllision occured at midnight when most on board were asleep. the chief steward and third and fifth engineers were the only officers saved.

CITY OF CALCUTTA
The steamer colliding with the Burutu (says the Exchange Telegraph Company) was the City of Calcutta, which made a huge rent in the Burutu's plates. the latter immediately took a heavy list, which prevented the launching of the boats.
[note:- the City of Calcutta is one of the City boats in the Ellerman combination with a tonnage of 7,636.]

SANK IN NINE MINUTES
A liverpool survivor told an "Echo" representative that the ship sank in nine minutes, and went down head first.

SURVIVORS OF THE BURUTU

It is feared that the loss of life in the collision last Thursday which resulted in the sinking of the Elder Dempster steamer Burutu will be much greater than was at first reported, and that the victims will number between 170 and 200.

Only one boat was successfully launched from the Burutu which heeled over and sank in 10 minutes. Captain Potter, Chief Officer Clark, and Chief Engineer Goddard, of the Burutu, are believed to have lost their lives. as was stated in The Times yuesterday, one of the three women on board (two passengers and a stewardess) was rescued. The Burutu was homeward bound from West Africa carrying a cargo of palm oil and kernels.
